Itinerary
After the optional opportunity for a 3 hour birdwatching tour in the Georgetown Botanical Gardens, transfer to Eugene F. Correia International Airport in Georgetown for a flight over the Essequibo and Demerara rivers. This flight will take you over hundreds of miles of unbroken tropical jungle before your arrival at Kaieteur Falls, the world’s highest free-falling waterfall.
Flight back to Georgetown for your overnight rest.
Overnight at Cara Lodge.
Pick up and transfer to Eugene F. Correia International Airport for your flight to Fair View Airstrip. Pick up from the airstrip for your transfer to Iwokrama River Lodge.
Here at the lodge, you can enjoy your stay in one of eight cabins nestled in the luscious, untouched rainforest. There is an array of activities to do in the area, such as a rainforest walk with an Iwokrama ranger, where you can spot numerous bird species. Some include the Capuchin bird, black nunbird, Amazonian Antshrike, and different Cotinga and Antwren species.
At night, enjoy a quiet boatride on the Essequibo river in hopes to spot caiman, spectacled owls, White-winged, Rufous, and Long-tailed Potoo, Zigzagged herons, or blackish Nightjar. Using your flashlight, you may spot Cox Boa, tree frogs, and maybe some mammals along the river’s edge.

Morning boat ride on the Essequibo river, circumnavigating around Indian House Island before returning to Iwokrama River Lodge for breakfast.
Later, we leave the lodge by boat before disembarking for a hike to Turtle Mountain. This 1hr 45min walk takes you up to the mountain’s summit at 360 meters (935ft) above sea level. At the summit, you may be able to spot Green Aracari, White Bellbird, or one of the five types of eagles that call the jungle canopies home.If you think this hike may be too strenuous you can take an alternative boat trip to Stanley Lake to search for Giant River Otters and Black Caiman.
As the afternoon cools you set out on a boat trip to visit Kurupukari Falls to see the Amerindian petroglyphs (dependent on the water level).
Overnight at Iwokrama River Lodge.
Transfer by 4×4 along a trail known for jaguar spotting. This road is the only north-south road in Guyana, and the only road that links the country to Brazil. This journey, characterised by its animal spotting opportunities, mainly with mammals such as Tapirs, Agouti, Tapa and Black Curassow, concludes at the Atta Rainforest Lodge. Here, you can enjoy the famous Iwokrama Canopy walkway, as well as the stunning clearings and gardens surrounding the lodge. This can allow for immense birding opportunities.

Before dawn, we will return to the canopies to engage in some birdwatching opportunities, as well as opportunities to spot Red Howler and Black Spider Monkeys.
Apart from the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway, you can enjoy the wildlife walks and trails in the area to spot a massive array of birds, primates and amphibians. You may spot Deer, Agouti and Tapir in the areas surrounding the lodge.
Night walks are also possible, with opportunities to spot some of the six cat species such as Jaguars and Ocelots.
Overnight at Atta Rainforest Lodge.
After breakfast, depart for Corkwood in the Iwokrama Forest, where you can enjoy a trail to spot the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock. Continue onwards to the indigenous community of Surama. This community is nestled in five square miles of savannah, which is ringed by the forest-coated Pakaraima Mountains. Most of the villagers of Surama are mainly from the Macushi tribe, and still practice their ancestral traditions. Here, you can explore the Surama Eco Lodge, enjoy a 3km walk across the savannah to the Burro Burro river for opportunities to spot Giant River Otters, Tapir, Tira and Spider Monkeys.

Embark in the morning for a walk up the Surama Mountain for incredible views of the village, savannah and surrounding Pakaraima Mountains.
Transfer from Surama to Rock View Lodge at Annai.
Rock View Lodge sits at the feet of the Pakaraima Mountains, where you can see how cashews are roasted by hand.
Overnight at Rock View Lodge.
Dawn hike on the Panorama Trail at the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains for stunning birdwatching opportunities. You can also enjoy the beautiful views across the savannah and village as the sun rises. Return to the lodge for breakfast before departure.
Transfer by vehicle from Rock View Lodge to Ginep Landing. From here, you will take a boat trip on the Rupunupi River to Karanambu Lodge, where you can spot Giant River Otters.
At Karanambu, you can spot a massive number of different species due to the diverse ecosystems in the lodge’s surrounding areas. Some different environments include savannah, marshy ponds, riparian forests, and a 30-mile stretch of the Rupunupi River. All these environments are available to explore through guided excursions.

This morning, we will explore the rolling grasslands surrounding the lodge, home to a population of giant anteaters, which can reach up to 2.2m long.
In the evening, enjoy a river excursion for some birdwatching, with the goal to find the Agami Heron. An evening walk along the airstrip here offers opportunities to find seven species of nightjar, and Double-striped Thick-knees.
Overnight at Karanambu Lodge.
Depart after breakfast on a motorised boat up the Rupununi River to the nearby Amerindian village of Yupukari and the Caiman House. Here you can explore the Caiman House Field Station, where you can meet local craftspeople and learn about the crafting using locally processed cotton. The field station is also heavily involved in turtle conservation.
Back at the Caiman House, you can join the locals as they go on the river to catch black caiman, which are weighed, measured, sexed and tagged before being rereleased back into the river.

Vehicle transfer from Caiman House to Lethem for a flight back to Eugene F. Correia airport and then to Georgetown. Enjoy an afternoon tour of the city of Georgetown with an experienced tour guide. Here you can explore the National Museum, Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, as well as the Public Library, City Hall, the Victoria Law Courts, St. Andrew’s Kirk, Stabroek Market, and St. George’s Cathedral. You can also visit the Botanical gardens.
Dinner at a local restaurant before returning to Cara Lodge for your overnight stay.
