A part of the stunning regeneration of Colombia has been the great influx of people visiting the incredible city of Cartagena de Indias, on the Caribbean coast of the country. The city is bringing in discerning travellers by the thousands, drawn to the city’s majestic colonial architecture, fascinating history, and vibrant food and nightlife.
The above listed would be enough to make you want to visit the City of Magic, as it is all enough to make you fall in love with the city, as many before have, but another thing about Cartagena that makes it so irresistible to travellers and Cartageneros alike is its spectacular Caribbean beaches. Dotted along its rich shoreline are some of the most jaw-dropping playas you are likely to see in the whole of Latin America, and we here at South America Tourism have compiled a list of our favourite three so that you too can share in the natural wonder and uber-fun activities they have on offer.
The Crown Jewel: Rosario Islands
The Rosario Islands archipelago sits off the coast of the Colombian coastline seducing weary travellers into making the hop over and soaking up all the pleasures it has to offer. Just 45 minutes away from Cartagena, the islands boast a great number of beach options. Here, you can take daily island hopping adventures, swimming in the crystal blue waters and taking snorkelling classes. And, if you feel so inclined, you can even hire your own yacht, speedboat, or sailboat, and let the stunning beauty of this chain of islands effortlessly guide you on a day of pure ocean tranquillity.
Looking for a Party? Head to Baru
Whilst the endless beauty of Rosario Islands provides a place for blissful escape from the hustle of life in the city, if you’re looking for a place to really blow off some steam whilst on a speeding boat, then you might want to let your hair down on the island of Baru. Here, locals and tourists alike combine to burn around on jet powered boats with coolers and sound systems attached, blasting reggaetón and hip hop against the backdrop of one of Colombia’s most ideal destinations. Whilst not for everyone, it is a great place to go if you’re looking for a party, and you can easily find yourself joining one once you have arrived.
The Most Pristine: Playa Blanca
Whilst the name of the beach is simple, there really couldn’t be one more fitting for this stretch of crystallised sand and turquoise waters. Playa Blanca provides Cartageneros and travellers with some of the most ideal scenery you could hope to see in the region. This beach is something straight from a postcard, and it is easy to see why its popularity is boosting by the year.
