The foothills of the Patagonian Andes offer wild beauty with the best highlights of Southern Patagonia, trekking to the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre granite needles and the wilderness of Laguna del Desierto, one of the few places where you can still easily see the Patagonian deer or “huemul” and pristine mountain woodland surrounded by glaciers extending all the way to the Chilean border. This is definitely one of the best and most isolated treks you can do in this wild area of Patagonia.
Drive to Rio Electrico to commence your trek. Climb to the East side of the mountain to view the Laguna de los Tres, with its zephyr blue colour. Fitzroy, 3405 metres in height, is considered one of the three most beautiful mountains on earth. Hike back to El Chalten (Daily walk 7 hrs).
Today we start close to the village, walking to Laguna (Lagoon) Capri and on to Lagunas Madre and Hija, then down the Fitz Roy river valley where we meet the trail which leads to the Cerro Torre base camp. The trail runs along beech forest, bogs and shrub land. From the camp, a short hike takes us to Laguna Torre, “with the “Glacier Grande” as follow: with the Grande glacier on its western side. It is common to see icebergs pushed by the wind on the shores of the lake. The thin and elegant 3128 metre peak of the Cerro Torre group and the
Adela range in the background complete this spectacular view. Walk back to Chalten. (Daily walk 5hrs).
We drive along Rio Las Vueltas to Laguna Desierto. Once at the southern tip of the the lake, we start an easy walk through a dense forest with mountain streams and panoramic views along the coastline of the lake. The scenery is breathtaking, with a unique view of the Fitz Roy and CerroTorre and a closer view of the Vespignani Glacier. Half way around the lake we encounter the exclusive Aguas Arriba Lodge where we spend the next 2 nights. (Daily walk 3hrs).
After breakfast we start a fantastic walk through the woods with several waterfalls along the way and streams to cross. Great wildlife can be seen on this wild area, even the elusive Huemul. Several points along the walk offer fantastic panoramas of this magnificent region of the Andes. We reach the Northern point of the lake where the border police is located. From onwards continue to the Chilean border at Laguna Larga before trekking back to the lodge. (Daily walk 6hrs).
